Each year railroads reinvest billions of dollars maintaining their infrastructure. On average the industry replaces 3% of the 140,000 plus track miles in the U.S. Costing around 200 dollars a foot to replace worn rail, the market is an enormous 4.4 billion annually. When you factor in municipal passenger rail and freight service interruptions the expense grows north of 10B.
